What To Look for in a Residential Remodeling Contractor

April 29, 2021

Looking for a house remodeling contractor can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. Consider these factors to help you find the right firm for the job.

Ask for Referrals or Reviews

So you’re ready to remodel one area of your house—or perhaps the whole place! The first resource that’s probably crossed your mind is your circle of trusted people. You likely know a homeowner who’s gone through a remodeling project, and who can vouch for the contractor they’ve worked with. Even if that’s not the case, there are many platforms online that allow you to find remodeling contractors that meet your requirements. Such platforms include Thumbtack and Houzz.

Check Licenses and Other Credentials

Once there are a few contractors that have caught your eye, make sure to check their credentials. Are they licensed and insured? How long have they been in business? What kind of experience and credentials do their draftsmen and tradesmen have? Verify licenses in your state; in California, you can check license status online through the Department of Consumer Affairs’ Contractors State License Board (CSLB).

Review the Work

Visit each potential contractors’ websites and portfolios. If you notice very little presence online and not a whole lot of opportunity to get to know the firm, consider it a red flag. Contractors should be easily reachable, responsive, and transparent.

Narrow Down Your Candidates

When you have a good number of candidates to choose from, narrow them down and get some interviews going. Take advantage of complimentary consultations if the firm offers it. Verify their licenses (as mentioned above) and have questions about process, decision-making, pricing, and experience ready. Get ready to take bids from different contractors.

Take advantage of site visits! Give your potential contractors a call and schedule a site visit (prepare to be onsite for at least an hour). Some questions and mental notes to add to your initial conversation:

  • Is the contractor able to articulate my project needs?
  • How is the contractor’s communication style?
  • Do they have other capabilities I may not be aware of but may be useful?
  • Will the contractor be able to help with permits and code compliance?
